The City of Asheville is the largest city in Western North Carolina. It is located in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains and is known for its natural beauty. Some people call it Appalachia.  Others might refer to it as the Southern Highlands or the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Cherokee people called it Katuah. Whatever the name, everyone agrees that our majestic mountain home is filled with scenery and natural wonders of unsurpassed beauty.

Asheville is one of the most welcoming, vibrant cities in America. The city's rich architectural legacy, with its mix of Art Deco, Beaux Arts and Neoclassical styles, is the perfect backdrop to the energy that emanates from the locally owned-shops and galleries, distinctive restaurants and exciting entertainment venues. Asheville's lively downtown has great architecture, interesting museums, 15 antique shops, 30 galleries, 50 restaurants, 10 coffee shops, and a dozen nightspots with live music or dancing. There is free WI-FI service at every turn. There are many festivals and events downtown, including Bele Chere, Shindig on the Green, Downtown After 5, and the weekly Drumming Circle. The Asheville Civic Center & Thomas Wolfe Auditorium and The Orange Peel host many major concerts and events.

In 2007, Asheville was named one of the top seven places to live in the U.S. by Former’s Cities Ranked and Rated. It was also named one of the world's top 12 must-see destinations for 2007 by Former’s travel guides. American Style magazine called it one of "America's Top 25 Arts Destinations," , and has also been called "a New Age Mecca" by CBS News' Eye On America, and named the "most vegetarian-friendly" city in America by PETA.
